From the heart
Dear partner and friend
I was challenged again with our responsibility to be a voice for the persecuted Church.
Challenged because the needs presented by our family of faith who flee violence are complex and vast. Displacement continues to occur in many countries, including Mozambique, Myanmar, Mexico and Turkey. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, more than 16 million Christians are displaced for their faith in countries such as Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria.
In June, we will commemorate World Refugee Day and Youth Day. These moments allow us to reflect on youth and children who are amongst those fleeing for their lives. Displacement, along with violence and conflict, is adding to their vulnerability.
Last year, our refugee report, “No road home”, highlighted the plight of displaced believers in Nigeria. For youth and children, the situation is particularly devastating since access to education during a critical time in their lives is disrupted or non-existent. The vulnerabilities of children and youth are compounded with the dangers of being trafficked or targeted in violence.
Lacking access to education, training and a safe environment leads to an uncertain future for them as adults. What makes a difference? Finding community, practical help and the knowledge that they are not forgotten.
The responsibility to pray, speak out and care for the Body of Christ is not a burden but an invitation, and you are invited.
Your voice in prayer is like sweet incense before the Lord. Your voice raises awareness about their situation. Your voice can represent them in civil society, government, the media or your local church, making a difference in their lives.
So please join me in crying out to God on behalf of our persecuted brothers and sisters, and offering them hope by using your talents and resources to support and serve them.
As you engage with the reality of persecution and the steadfastness of the persecuted Church, may you again see Jesus and His kingdom as the precious pearl tobe sought after at any cost. He is worthy of our allegiance and our lives.
Peace
